High Temperature Pyrolysis converts low-value forest biomass into renewable natural gas (RNG) and biocarbon, a drop-in replacement for metallurgical coal.
RNG is injectable into the natural gas grid; utilities sign 20-year offtake agreements at premiums, while biocarbon has signed offtake agreements with ArcelorMittal Dofasco and Elkem.
Elkem signed a definitive five-year biocarbon offtake for 62,500 tonnes, or 12,500 tonnes annually.
Thorold facility
Phase 1a was built and in final commissioning in September 2026, with 5,500 tonnes/year of biocarbon capacity; Phase 1b is planned to raise capacity to 11,000 tonnes/year.
Phase 2 is planned to add 380,000 GJ/year of RNG and 8,250 tonnes/year of biocarbon; full-facility revenue potential is $30M–$35M annually.
The 50/50 BMI Group joint venture is targeting non-recourse project debt for Phase 2, backed by a 20-year RNG offtake LOI, with contract signing targeted to coincide with financing close.
Project pipeline and growth
Five-facility pipeline targets $200M in project-level annual revenue potential; named projects are Thorold, Saguenay, Lake Nipigon, Espanola and Saint-Félicien.
Saint-Félicien is wholly owned, targets construction in 2027 and operations in 2028, and projects $12M+ in annual revenue.
Lake Nipigon and Espanola each target construction in 2027 and operations in 2028; each is projected to generate $80M+ in annual revenue.
Saguenay’s wholly owned pelletization facility is operational; planned capacity is 3,000 tonnes in Phase 1 and 10,000 tonnes in Phase 2, with $10M annual revenue potential.
