FY17 delivered profitable growth: total premium rose 19% to ₹19,445 Cr, Indian GAAP PAT increased 9% to ₹892 Cr, and new business margin reached 21.6%.
Growth combined 9% individual WRP expansion with 59% group premium growth; embedded value increased 21% to ₹12,389 Cr.
Priorities included profitable growth, customer service, digital capability and broader distribution; the proposed Max Life merger was awaiting regulatory approvals.
Financial highlights
Total premium was ₹19,445 Cr, up 19% YoY; renewal premium rose 9% to ₹10,749 Cr, first-year regular individual premium grew 8% to ₹3,573 Cr, and group premium increased 59% to ₹4,495 Cr.
Standalone PAT rose 9% to ₹892 Cr from ₹818 Cr; consolidated PAT was ₹887 Cr, compared with ₹817 Cr in FY16.
Investment income increased to ₹11,368 Cr from ₹1,959 Cr, mainly on unit-linked unrealised gains versus prior-year losses; corresponding reserve movements made the UL impact profit-neutral.
Operating expenses rose 30% to ₹2,453 Cr; expenses were 12.6% of total premium versus 11.6% in FY16, reflecting distribution, technology and business growth costs.
AUM reached ₹91,742 Cr, up 24% YoY; net worth increased 22% to ₹3,839 Cr.
Outlook and guidance
FY18 priorities were profitable growth, an agile multi-distribution platform and long-term customer value; a revamped agency model was planned for rollout in FY18.
HDFC International planned to expand reinsurance capacity into other markets and expected significantly higher revenue in FY18.
Favourable demographics, rising financial savings, low insurance penetration and digital adoption supported long-term sector growth, while competitive intensity remained high.
