Q4 2023 earnings summary
31 Oct, 2026Executive summary
Q4 adjusted sales and EBITDA declined amid industrial weakness, while Gas Cylinders’ margin gains and cost actions helped offset pressure.
Strategic review concluded Graphic Arts no longer fits the portfolio; a 2024 sale process is starting, while Gas Cylinders and Elektron were identified as having long-term profitable growth potential.
Financial highlights
Q4 adjusted sales fell 17.4% to $87.8M from $106.3M; adjusted EBITDA declined to $8.1M from $11.2M and adjusted diluted EPS to $0.13 from $0.25.
Q4 GAAP continuing-operations net loss was $6.5M, or $0.24 per diluted share; adjusted net income was $3.6M, or $0.13 per diluted share. Adjusted gross margin rose 110 bps to 19.0%.
Lower volume and mix reduced Q4 sales by $26.9M, partly offset by $7.2M favorable pricing and $1.2M from FX.
FY adjusted sales were $373.5M, adjusted EBITDA $43.3M, adjusted diluted EPS $0.80 and free cash flow $16.8M; GAAP net sales were $405.0M, down 4.3%.
Outlook and guidance
FY 2024 guidance, excluding Graphic Arts and assuming its divestiture, is adjusted sales growth of -3% to +1%, adjusted EBITDA of $42M–$46M, adjusted diluted EPS of $0.70–$0.85 and free cash flow of $20M–$24M.
Earnings recovery is expected to begin in Q2, with adjusted sales improving in H2; Elektron demand is expected to improve gradually, not immediately.
2024 assumptions include capex of $11M–$14M, a tax rate of ~23%, GBP/USD of 1.25 and net debt/EBITDA of ~1.5x.
Guidance assumes 100% adjusted net income-to-cash conversion and minimal restructuring payments; recovery of historical legal expenses may provide upside.
