The design cycle accelerator
If you have seen a rocket launch, flown on an airplane, driven a car, or used a computer, chances are Ansys software played a critical role in its creation. Ansys provides innovators worldwide with engineering simulation software, enabling them to push innovation forward faster and confidently achieve their most ambitious goals. Engineers can use Ansys’ products to accelerate their design cycles by simulating the performance of their designs in the Ansys software.
John Swanson saw the major flaws of analyzing their engineering designs by hand while working at the Westinghouse Astronuclear Laboratory in the 1960s. This led Swanson to found Ansys in 1970, under Swanson Analysis Systems Inc., and develop engineering software that could automate this analysis.
Today, Ansys operates in a niche sector with high barriers to entry and favorable growth opportunities. They are the market leaders in developing engineering simulation software in the defense, aerospace, electronics, and automotive industries. The company has saved the automotive industry billions of dollars with their simulation software, an integral part of developing new products.
Strong moat and stable operating margins
As a result of the complex nature of their products, Ansys enjoys a strong moat around the core business, with very stable operating margins averaging around 35 percent over the period 2009-2021. It is truly a remarkable company, with its foundation consisting of the broadest and deepest solutions set on the market and their three main growth vectors: new users, new areas of physics, and new computational methods.
Ansys went public in 1996. The company spent the 2000s acquiring several engineering design companies, obtaining additional technology for fluid dynamics, electronics design, and physics analysis.
