Senan Delargy, President of Trinity SMF: Increasing efficiency with Quartr Pro

21 Aug 2025

Senan Delargy is the CEO of the Trinity Student Managed Fund at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. The organization has been using Quartr Pro since the spring of 2025, and recently signed up to continue the research partnership for the 2025/2026 school year.

We sat down with Senan, who kindly took the time to speak to us while on lunch break at his internship at Guggenheim Partners. We spoke about the organization he leads, their student-operated fund, their investment philosophy, and how Quartr Pro has helped the Trinity SMF become better decision makers.

Hi Senan! Thank you very much for taking the time out of your day to talk to us. Could you start by introducing Trinity SMF and what you do?

For sure. Thank you very much for inviting me to have this discussion today.

Trinity SMF is a student-run fund at Trinity College Dublin that was established back in 2011. The founding team had seen the concept of student-run funds in the U.S. and were keen to replicate it in Europe. They got in contact with different financial institutions and past alumni in Dublin, and managed to raise €30,000 in starting capital for the portfolio. The fund was the first of its kind to be established in Europe.

We’re only open to students and faculty at Trinity College Dublin, and we currently have about 2,500 members, which is just under 10% of the total student population. As far as I'm aware, we're the only free society on campus because we don't want any barriers to entry. We operate a real-life equity portfolio, and Trinity SMF currently has an AUM of about €750,000. The fund is run by our investment committee, which is made up of between 40-50 people, normally comprised of students in their second year of college all the way up until fourth year of college.

We also have an operations committee, which is roughly the same size as the investment committee, and they're in charge of organizing all of the events. This can be anything from a speaker coming in, an activity, or a social event with another society. Last year, we held an event every 3 days during the college year, so there’s always something going on.

What is Trinity SMF’s purpose?

The primary objective of Trinity SMF is to act as a learning tool for the student body about investing and general financial literacy. Retail investing participation is quite low in Ireland, and isn’t anywhere near as high as it is in many other countries around the world. One of our key missions is to enable our members to develop a genuine interest in investing and the markets.

For the members of the investment committee, the purpose is to act as a learning tool for those members of the investment committee who are looking to have a career in asset management or a similar profession.

Perfect segue into the investment committee and the fund. Could you tell us more about the Trinity SMF fund?

Absolutely. Like I said previously, we operate a real-life equity portfolio, and again, it acts as a very effective learning and training tool. We want the students to get hands-on experience working with real money and to learn from everything we do. We really push the student to look at the business, understand it, and examine the different aspects of every company we cover. We then want to analyze how all of these moving parts influence the stock price, and if there is something that the market has failed to factor in.

We’re long only, and we try to place as much focus on in-depth fundamental analysis and taking our time. Investment decisions typically take us a month or two to make, and we love finding opportunities where we believe we’ve spotted asymmetric returns. We also like to see ourselves as an organization that’s not afraid of making mistakes. If we make an investment that goes well, we’re very happy. But if we make an investment and it doesn’t go well, we’re also quite happy, because then we’re learning from it. If we make the same mistake twice, we’re not quite so happy.

We also like to make positive contributions along the way, and we give back to the Trinity Community every year. Last year, we provided €15,000 back to the community at large, and that’s possible because of the good decisions that students at Trinity SMF make when they’re investing.

What have been the results of incorporating Quartr Pro into the organization?

Quartr Pro is a great platform because it centralizes everything you need. Annual reports, earnings calls, transcripts, and everything else that is the bread and butter of a fundamental investor. The platform gathers all of those elements into one place and makes it a lot more accessible. We don’t have to go online to try and find some inaccessible document that isn’t searchable, which, all in all, makes our research process far, far easier.

We’ve also seen that the students have increased their use of investor relations documents thanks to the platform. In the past, I’ve personally had difficulty finding Q&A sessions and transcripts for certain European companies, which I now access via Quartr Pro.

Overall, it’s really helping us out in the day-to-day process. Research is one of those things that can take a very long time. We don’t have access to Bloomberg or similar platforms, and before we often found ourselves scouring the internet with a million tabs open, trying to find all the resources we needed when researching. Quartr Pro makes that workflow easier and far more enjoyable, because it means you can start to dedicate your brain power to looking at the business and analyzing instead of trying to find a comment that you saw half an hour ago. It saves us time, and it helps us become better decision-makers.

How was the onboarding process for getting your members onto Quartr Pro?

It was super easy, and I love that the platform is very accessible. I think that’s actually one of the key differences between your platform and others that we’ve used in the past. The new investment committee all came on board in April, and they were up and using Quartr Pro in a very, very short amount of time.

I wasn’t getting any texts or emails about “I can’t access the platform” or “how do I search up this company?” Everyone received their credentials and were on the platform straight away, which is a dream for me. The last thing that I want is 40 or 50 members getting in contact with me because they’ve run into issues.

What has the experience of partnering with Quartr been like?

It was my predecessor who initiated the partnership in February of 2025, and both she and I have found the experience to be great. I was introduced to the Quartr team when I took over, and they’ve been incredibly helpful.

Quartr is a partner that has been active in conversation the entire time. Sometimes, as a student organization, we can be at the bottom list of priorities, but here we never feel like we’re trying to chase someone down when we need something. Overall, we really feel like Quartr is engaging with the partnership completely, and it’s a relationship where we’re taken seriously.

Thank you for the kind words. We’ve been really happy to work with you and the Trinity SMF. Before we wrap up: would you recommend other organizations to work with Quartr?

100%, it’s an incredibly exciting company to partner with. The team is great, the platform is great, and I can’t recommend it enough.

Thank you very much for your time, Delargy.

Thank you, it was my pleasure.
