Investor Day 2024 summary
8 Oct, 2026Growth and capacity expansion
Targeting 130+ GW of capacity by 2032, including 60+ GW renewables; capex through 2032 estimated at ~₹7 lakh crore.
21,029 MW under construction: 9,214 MW renewables, 9,560 MW coal and 2,255 MW hydro; a further 26 GW was in advanced pre-construction or planning.
Planned additions include 7 GW conventional and 16 GW renewable capacity over three years, plus 15.2 GW further conventional capacity over the next two fiscals.
Plans call for 26 GW of new thermal capacity; 9.5 GW was under construction and ~8 GW in tendering, with remaining awards targeted within a year.
Thermal additions are planned as brownfield expansions near mines; completed costs cited at ₹10–11 crore/MW and indicative energy charges at ₹3.5–5, subject to PPAs and regulated returns.
Fuel security and thermal operations
Captive coal production reached 34 MT in FY24, up 48% YoY; target is to meet at least 25% of coal needs from captive mines by FY30.
Coal production is expected to exceed 40 MT this year; eight mines have 86 MTPA peak capacity, rising to 91.6 MTPA with THDC’s Amelia mine. Commercial mine sourcing aims to reduce and ultimately eliminate imported coal needs.
Thermal units totaling 13 GW have commissioned FGD, with the remaining 54 GW scheduled over the next three years.
FY24 coal supply agreement materialisation was 92%; 9.6 MMT of coal was imported to augment stocks.
Energy transition and new businesses
Strategic ambition is to build an integrated energy business by 2032, spanning renewables, green hydrogen and fuels, nuclear, green mobility and carbon capture.
Mahi Banswara nuclear project with NPCIL is expected to begin groundbreaking within two months; JV ownership is 49%/51%. A 2.8 GW Rajasthan project is under consideration, and SMR technology is being explored with BARC.
Nuclear construction costs were cited at ₹17–18 crore/MW and indicative energy charges near ₹7/kWh; longer-term ambitions are in the tens of GW, with sites under discussion across states.
NEEPCO and THDC are developing 12 GW of non-fossil capacity by FY30, with estimated capitalisation of ₹75,000 crore; NEEPCO’s new Arunachal hydro projects total 2,626 MW.
Green hydrogen plans include a 1,200-acre Pudimadaka hub, piped-gas blending, a green methanol pilot and a Ladakh mobility project; wider initiatives include green chemicals, storage and waste-to-energy.
