Peak demand has crossed 270 GW and is projected to exceed 450 GW by FY 2036; generation share is ~24% against 17% of installed capacity.
Energy transition and new businesses
Renewable capacity targets are 60 GW by FY 2032 and 136 GW by FY 2037, from 12 GW operational; FY 2027 additions of 7–8 GW are conditional on transmission availability.
Storage pipeline includes 38.9 GWh of BESS, with 6.62 GWh under execution and 30.4 GWh of non-solar-hour projects under development; 18.6 GWh has been tendered.
Pumped-storage ambition exceeds 80 GW; 13.2 GW of projects have been allocated, while an 18 GW portfolio is at various stages. Targets include 3–5 GW by FY 2033 and nearly 6 GW by FY 2037.
Nuclear ambition is 30 GW by FY 2047; the 2.8 GW Mahi Banswara project has approvals, and 34 sites are being explored.
Pudimadaka green hydrogen hub spans 1,200 acres with envisaged investment of ~INR 1 lakh crore; coal gasification is under development for synthetic natural gas and chemicals.
Operational performance and energy security
Coal stations achieved 72.04% PLF in FY 2026; forced outage rate improved from 3.9% to ~3.75%, and FY 2026 coal imports were zero.
Captive mines produced 48.66 million tons in FY 2026, meeting 18% of coal needs; the target is 25% by FY 2030, with 100% coal supply tied up through long-term agreements and captive mines.
Trade receivables were fully realized in FY 2026; receivable days fell from 31 to 15.
