Where is advertising spend going?

Below, we compare the 3-year growth CAGRs and the insane scale of advertising revenue streams from Google, Meta, and Amazon. What's particularly noteworthy, and not often discussed, is that Amazon's advertising segment generates more EBIT than AWS when a 64% EBIT margin is applied, which should be achievable for that segment according to several analysts. It also grows faster than AWS.

Starbucks' store growth since inception

Inspired by the vibrant espresso culture in Milan, Howard Schultz envisioned Starbucks as a community-centered coffeehouse. When the original founders resisted his idea, Schultz left in 1985 to launch his own coffee chain, Il Giornale. He then returned in 1987 to buy Starbucks for $3.8 million with help from Bill Gates Sr. Schultz's vision and leadership then drove Starbucks to global dominance, now with over 38,000 stores worldwide.

The Power of Scarcity

When your business is built on scarcity and desirability, less is more. In 2023, Volvo Cars sold ~52 times as many cars as Ferrari; 709K vs. 13.7K units. Looking at revenue, Volvo Cars generated €35.3B, which is ~6x more than Ferrari's €6B. Interestingly enough, despite the company's scale, Volvo Cars "only" generated €1.8B in EBIT (5%), compared to Ferrari's €1.6B (27%).
